What Is a Geothermal Heat Pump?

A geothermal heat pump is a whole home heating and cooling device that extracts heat directly from the ground. It isn’t very different from what you find with a more traditional air source heat pump, but the geothermal version actually works much better in extreme cold temperatures because the ground will always be warmer than the air during the winter.

Heat from the ground is extracted by a liquid that cycles through a loop of pipes installed in the ground below or around your home. This liquid absorbs heat as it passes through the ground and then transfers that heat to the air in your home. It does this when the heated liquid reaches the indoor compressor unit of the heat pump. Once relieved of its heat load, the liquid returns to cycle through the pipe loop and gather more heat.

In the summer, this cycle is reversed and the heat is extracted from your indoor air and transferred into the liquid which can then carry it back underground and release it there. This is a highly efficient way to keep your home cool all summer long, making a geothermal heat pump a great investment you can use regardless of the season.

Understanding Geothermal Installation Options

Geothermal systems can be installed in one of two ways. A horizontal installation involves digging a long trench in your yard about four feet deep and installing the loop of pipe throughout your property. A vertical installation on the other hand, is carried out by drilling straight down into the ground and placing the pipe straight up and down. Both of these are perfectly workable systems.
